Advice from an Eighty- Three -Year- Old

One hot Californian morning I came to visit an old woman who had just returned home after an emergency followed by a three-month stay in a nursing home.  When asked for advice on how to live decently, she said:
  • Let go everything
  • Love all, and
  • Never speak ill of anyone.
Regarding parenting, her advice was:

Do your best as parents, but when your children are grown-ups and have their own lives, respect them as independent entities.  Never control them; they have their own lives.

Regarding marriage life, she said:

  • Tolerance and
  • Compromise
