Essential Intellectual Traits

1/ Humility vs. Arrogance
no boastfulness or conceit; should not claim more than one actually knows

2/ Courage vs. Cowardice
true to one's own thinking; willing to face severe penalties for nonconformity with courage

3/ Empathy vs. Narrowmindedness
conscious of one's own egocentric tendency to identify truth; conscious of the need to put oneself in the place of others in order to genuinely understand them

4/ Autonomy vs. Conformity
rational control of one's beliefs, values, and inferences; thinking for oneself

5/ Integrity vs. Hypocrisy
consistently and honestly holding one's self to rigorous standards

6/ Perseverance vs. Laziness

7/ Confidence in Reason vs. Distrust of Reason and Evidence
rational viewpoints, reasonable conclusions, logic and coherent thinking

8/ Fairmindedness vs. Unfairness
having a consciousness of the need to treat all viewpoints alike; adherence to intellectual standards without reference to one's own advantage or the advantage of one's group
