A Post under AP News: Absurdities in the USA
"I'm a greencard lottery winner myself and eventually became a citizen. The vetting process was very thorough, not only a very extensive criminal background check but also a medical exam with mandatory vaccinations. Also a minimum of a highschool diploma was requested and enough money on your bank account to support yourself for a while. If they would do the same procedure on every born American and deport that person by failure we would have a real mass deportation. But the thing is, when I came here and was doing groceries at Walmart, I noticed this cabinet with shotguns and wondered if I could buy one. Something entirely impossible where I come from. 30 minutes later I walked out the store with the store manager and outside he handed me the gun and the ammunition. I was flabbergasted, I never touched a gun and never had any training and there I was holding a 12 gauge shotgun just bought for only $150.
In my eyes that's just crazy and asking for trouble. I am very sad about every news article about gun violence I read but I am not surprised. It isn't just common sense to make fire arms that easily available to everybody. Walmart did make a phone call to the FBI by the way but they passed me in 10 minutes, after being in the country for only 2 years. With my friends in the old country I often make the joke that buying a beer is harder than buying a gun in America. That's the real problem not where you are born. Bad people come from everywhere, believe it or not but even from the United States.
That's exactly my point. A few simple questions will not protect you from selling THAT GUN. In the old country if you want to have a gun you can only have it for sports or hunting. You need to become a member of a shooting range, after a year you can apply for a gun permit at the police station. The police will vet you and talk with the shooting range. Then they will come to your house and inspect your mandatory gun safe. If you get your permit you can buy the gun which you can only transport locked in a case to the shooting range or hunting ground. BTW I have nothing against Walmart and don't blame them. I could have bought the gun at Cabela's too. But I found it strange to find a weapon in a store where they sell groceries and children toys."
